NREG, Irrigation Canal Improvement and WUAs role in Karnataka
The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme has made dent in irrigation infrastructure maintenance by the coordinated efforts of water users cooperative societies and Gram Panchayat. This article by Mr. Anandappa Byalli and K.V. Kashid, the representatives of WUCs from Badami Taluk of Karnataka explains how water users associations could involve in NREG and improve the canal networks. The article also unwinds the institutions inter relations in other words the convergence between local organisations and Gram Panchayats. Karnataka is part of the larger study that covers two tanks namely
Belagumba tank in Magadi taluk of Bangalore Rural and Kandhikere in
Chikanayakanahalli taluk in Tumkur District and Tungabhadra Left Bank
Canal under major canal system. The study was carried out by Mr. R.
Doraiswamy and Dr. Peter Mollinga. The study is about the farmers deprived of canal water and their livelihoods.
